An advanced Modern Dance course designed for and offered at Chapman University Dance Department: We will identify core values of Modern Dance, and then recontextualize and reimagine them. This semester will be a laboratory for us to explore what Modern Dance is if not seen through the lens of whiteness, and what Modern feels like when we make conscious decisions about how we embody it. What happens when we call the structures of how white supremacy impacts Modern Dance, our bodies, and ourselves into the light and consider them, instead of pretending they don’t exist? What will we learn together when we re-evaluate the values of Modern Dance through an antiracist lens?
