PROJECTS
A conversation with Toni Krizter, a fellow Disabled artist, birthed the term ‘Chronic Projects.’ GTM’s relationship to projects may change, but they stay with us, reoccur, shape shift, and overlap just like the history of pain and illnesses in our Disabled bodies and minds.
From dance to writing, festivals to community space building, healing arts projects and more than human kin relational research, GTM’s projects have taken different shapes across a vast spectrum — all informed by years of embodied research and many collaborators.
Each project inhabits several categories, united under GTM’s values: use the tags below to navigate by category, and please note that all projects hold multiple tags.
Color Outside the Lines
Welcome to Color Outside The Lines, the game show meets dance theater project about all things racial. Join a team and get ready to play the ‘Ignant Spelling Bee’ and many more games as part of our live studio audience! Come discover for yourself that race is more important, much more complicated, and infinitely more ridiculous than you ever imagined.
InVISIBLE
This project underwent five years of development, combining storytelling with dance theatre pieces, and advocacy for the rights of the bi+ community. Under the title inVISIBLE, we have created four dance theatre works about bi+ identity, hosted five bi+ community storytelling workshops, and two bi+ storytelling silent discos.
Shedding
Through a year and a half spent in bed due to acute illness, lifelong disability, and the cumulative effects of structural inequities, Kai Hazelwood was accompanied by her beloved snake Bisoux. Shedding weaves curiosity and play into learning how to survive a personal apocalyptic moment, and illuminates how these ideas are also critical for ongoing healing from the effects of surviving colonization and its offspring: white supremacy, capitalism, cis-heteronomativity and ableism.
HomeBody Living: EMDR/Somatic Therapy
HomeBody Living is the embodied healing practice of body-based artist, Kai Hazelwood. I am a life long body-based artist and experienced healing arts facilitator, a survivor of childhood trauma, racism, and sexual violence. I am a Disabled Queer and Black cis woman. I bring all of my lived experience and training in embodiment to you.
Practice Progress
Practice Progress is a relational commitment between Kai Hazelwood and Sarah Ashkin to practice, embody, risk, and learn with you; to commit to lifelong anti-racisting together.
Kai and Sarah are a Black lady and white lady, and they are in a caring personal relationship, a professional collaboration, and they also make public facing creative work.
The Modern Breakdown
An advanced Modern Dance course designed for and offered at Chapman University Dance Department: We will identify core values of Modern Dance, and then recontextualize and reimagine them.
Pieter
As the first Black and Disabled leader of this historically white-led and inaccessible organization, I was tasked with changing Pieter into the organization it had claimed to be on paper but had yet to embody in real life.
